Allotment Diary

This page is for my reference but you are welcome to read if you wish and l will be updating regularly.

31st March - 4th April - Four hours each day for five days digging in the manure and digging out the weeds.  The ground is very wet and heavy after the long wet winter. Planted the first row of potatoes 4th April Pentland Javlin.

The greenhouse has lots of seedlings coming along nicely, potted on the sprouts, moved the broad beans and onions outside to harden off ready to plant out. the cabbage, cauli, broccolli, sweet peas, tomatoes are all doing well, the courgettes and butternut have just germinated, no sign of the sweet peppers yet.

This week in the greenhouse l have sown
Sweetcorn, runner beans, leeks, lettace (barcelona similar to iceberg) & mixed leaves.

6th April - Planted out the broad beans and netted to protect from the birds also planted out 50 onions that were started off in greenhouse and had good growth - not netted these so hope the birds have not got them.
Sown Spring onions in greenhouse in a tray

11th April - Planted out the Shallots - Bistro as well as the remaining onions, planted out half of the sweetpeas.  Also managed to plant potatoes - Charlotte.  Rotevated again and am very pleased with how the allotment is looking so far this year. Plum tree has lots of blossom, the cherry buds almost ready to bloom, Glorious weather today and had a very good day - love spending peaceful time there :)
Greenhouse.... potted on the cabbage, both lettace variety have germinated and the sweet peppers that l moved into the conservatory have germinated too.

14th April - Caitlin came around for the first time this year and checked with Brian to see if he would have any flowers for her this year, she dug over her space and helped with a few little jobs and is looking forward to planting this year.

15th April - Allotment is looking good with only a little weeding under the fruit trees to do.
The josterberry has small fruits forming already.
In the greenhouse....Leeks and spring onions starting to germinate. Potted on the caulis, planted the pumpkin seeds. Put the sprouts outside to start to harden off - will cover with fleece outside for a few nights and hope to plant out next week.

18th April - Planted the last row of potatoes Maris Piper - maincrop  Planted out the sprouts that have been hardening off for a week - they are sheltered at bottom by the apple tree - Netted well to protect from birds,
Caitlin planted in her spot - 2 sprouts, few potatoes.

20th April, today in the greenhouse potted on mixed lettace, courgettes & tomatoes.  Seeds in trays - beetroot, some more runner beans and nasturtiums which l will plant under fruit bushes to give some ground cover to see if this reduces weeds. Put cabbages on patio to harden off for a week before planting out.

24th April
Allotment....Planted out the cabbages Golden Acre (netted), Caitlin planted hers on her area too. Sowed Mange Tout - (Oregan Pea) one row, the broad beans l out in a few weeks ago have been nibbled around the edges so put Derris Dust around them and will need to keep a close eye on these.
Greenhouse...  Put swede seeds in cells, potted on spinach and cucumbers. Moved cauli's outside to harden off for a few days.

27th April
Allotment... Planted out the caulis, Caitlin came around too to plant out hers.  They are looking very healthy, just have the broccoli to plant then that area is full.  After watching Gardeners world this week and seeing Monty put his parsnip and radish seeds together l thought l would give this a try so have sown one row. The theory is the radish germinate within two weeks and grow whereas the parsnips take five weeks to germinate - you can then see where your parsnips will be and keep fairly weed free.
The pea seeds look like they may have been disturbed so need to keep an eye on those and maybe add some more. A little bit of weeding around the fruit and it is looking good.
Ruth gave us some of her purple sprouting broccoli to take home for dinner - l may try growing this as a few of the allotments have grown it and has been a good year for it.
Greenhouse.... moved the broccoli and some spinach outside to the patio to harden off . The beetroot is starting to germinate this has only taken one week. Most of the runner beans are through too.

4th May
Allotment... The radish that were sown last week are now starting to germinate and can see where the row is, the peas are also starting to germinate so am pleased about that.
Planted out the broccoli and some of the spinach and am pleased they survived the frost the other night.  I have also planted out some of the lettace and transplanted the spring onions which was a bit tedious but at least they are weed free.
Gave the allotment a little hoe over and it is looking fantastic.
Checked the fruit over and the gooseberries have lots of fruit on already as does the josterberry.  The pear tree looked liked it was struggling last week and the leaves were curling even though the blossom looked healthy so after a quick google search decided it may be short on water so the plan is to give it a watering can full every day and so far looks to be improving.

Greenhouse.... planted a few flower seeds - marigold and stocks and will put some more in at start of June.  The courgettes are doing really well, the pumpkins, swede, beetroot and nasturtiums have now germinated.  I am going to underplant all the fruit area with nasturtiums to surpress the weeds and give a nice bit of colour, this is the first time l have done this.

8th May
Allotment....Planted out a couple of courgettes, hopefully we won't be having any frosts - will need to cover with fleece if we do. Also planted a few of the runner bean plants and some seed from last years beans on the opposite side of poles. Planted out the galdioli and a row of pea seeds.  Don't know where the rest of the stuff is going as l am running out of space,

Greenhouse ... potted on the pumpkins, sweet peppers and butternuts, put the dwarf bean seeds in a couple of days ago - this is the first time l have started them off in the greenhouse but think it helps to keep weeds down if l plant little plants out with good spacing to get a hoe in between.  Everything in GH is doing well with no disasters so far.
